SUMMARY:Ihlsee Salon #4 – Meet us at the Biennale in Venice
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided tour led by Dr. Stefanie Thiedig\, sinologist\, expert on Chinese contemporary art and Chairwoman of the Residenz am Ihlsee. \nRegistration: Please email us beforehand if you are planning to come: contact@residenz-ihlsee.org \nWe will begin at the Chinese Pavilion\, where we will explore how traditional Chinese thought meets contemporary art\, science and digital technologies\, and decide for ourselves whether they make a happy couple. \nFrom there\, we will stroll to the Taiwan Pavilion in the Palazzo delle Prigioni (about 15 minutes towards the city center) to discover Li Yi-Fan’s take on the same theme. \nWhen the exhibitions close at 6 pm\, the conversation does not have to. We will wrap up the afternoon with a relaxed aperitivo to keep talking and to shape our own narratives on philosophy\, community and technology. Come for the art\, stay for the spritz.

SUMMARY:Ihlsee-Salon #3
DESCRIPTION:Topic: For our next Salon\, we will read Mi You’s “The China Moment” and Su Wei’s “Individualism Through the Lens of the ‘China Conundrum’”\, both published in The China Moment: Contextualizing Individualism in Chinese Contemporary Art (2026). Together\, we will explore what defines the current moment in Chinese contemporary art and how it is represented in the West today. Has the “China moment” passed? Is the Western art world still interested in Chinese contemporary art—and\, if so\, on whose terms? We will also discuss how artists navigate these contexts and find ways to express themselves as individuals\, both within the specific historical circumstances of contemporary China and in today’s global art world. \nIf you would like to join the meeting online\, please contact us for the meeting details. \nTexts: \nMi You: “The China Moment”. SUMMARY:Ihlsee-Salon #2
DESCRIPTION:Topic \nOur next Salon is all about community work in the art space. We will read and discuss the newly published and related booklet by LAFT Berlin – Landesverband freie darstellende Künste Berlin e. V. (2026). The publication explores different approaches to community work in the arts and invites us to think about what we mean when we speak of “community”. Together\, we would like to use the text as a starting point to reflect on our own work and ask: What does community mean to us? Who is our community? When are we talking about an audience\, and when about participation? And what does it mean to create spaces in which people can actively participate and shape a shared artistic and cultural environment? \nThe Salon is an open space for conversation and exchange. If you would like to participate in the Salon online\, please contact us and we will send you the meeting details. \nLiterature \n\nLAFT Berlin – Landesverband freie darstellende Künste Berlin e. V. SUMMARY:Ihlsee-Salon #1
DESCRIPTION:Topic\nThere are more and more voices in the art field that say that crisis in general\, the current one specifically\, force us to rethink. As the article we use as our starting point suggests in its opening argument: Crisis forces us into models of practical alliances. From there\, we look at an art market in crisis mode and models of “co-opetition” – a portmanteau of cooperation and competition. Applying this business strategy\, based on studies of game theory\, it means that combining efforts and resources creates value\, efficiency and quality. It benefits multiple players\, including rivals – from vertically integrated producers to horizontal networks. Sounds great\, and it’s what we aim for as we start our residency. Yet it also carries a risk of unequal relations of force: Under the banner of collaboration and claims of good-will\, one might fall for the fantasy of harmony and equilibrium. Keeping that in mind\, we intend to turn what we have so far offered individually into a shared endeavor among allies – to build a platform that connects people\, places\, knowledge and resources around contemporary art from and connected to the Chinese-speaking world. A mantra might be: Let’s stay open to all kinds of models to keep that balance. \nLiterature\nTom McDonough (2025\, en/de): Through Foul and Fairs | Messen im Gesellschaftsspiegel.
